At 27, I Left My Job to Become an Entrepreneur…My Entrepreneurial Story — The Kendra Studio

As I begin this new chapter in my entrepreneurial story, you know starting my Squarespace website designer and digital strategist online business for female entrepreneurs who seek both financial and location independence (yayyyyyy!!!), I feel it’s the perfect time to get you up to speed on how I came to be here in front of you today.

By providing tools and valuable lessons online I hope to assist women in navigating their entrepreneurial journey. I’m committed to empowering women to reclaim their lives and to work for themselves to improve the quality of their lives.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve always wanted to work for myself and run a very successful, profitable and valuable business. Over the years, I have had positions in corporate America that I worked hard to get and when I got them I was overworked, underpaid and disrespected. For example, I was a salaried employee and at a few jobs, I worked minimum 12-hour days.  I would manage my staff and approve timesheets, just to realize that they were getting paid more than me and only putting in a fraction of the effort and time I was.

During my time in corporate America, I discovered my passion: Helping others with their technology needs while I continue to produce content and work on multiple projects. Check!

I knew it was past time to reject working within a system that was inherently working against me.  I would go to meetings and dream of working remotely because the majority of my tech roles could be done remotely. I had old school bosses who preferred their staff to be in the office working from 8AM-6PM.  And let me tell you, I was so over it.

The saddest part was going to work as the sun was rising and leaving work as the sun was setting. I would get to go outside for off-location events but that wasn’t often. I was hungry and excited for quick breaks that I got and I ran outside to feel the warm sun on my skin for a few minutes as much as I could.

I knew this wasn’t working for me and I wasn’t about to continue to put myself through the torture of being tethered to a desk in an office every single day of the week while working for abusive bosses and putting myself through undue stress. Living for the weekend and being too tired to enjoy it when it finally came around was just too depressing.  I knew I loved working in digital communications and social media, however, I also knew I loved having free time and being able to enjoy my free time.

So I made a big decision and left my safe, stable full-time position to move across the world to Hawaii to do more creative freelance work! I figured in doing this I would have more time to travel and enjoy my surroundings with myself and others.  I had no idea how to start a successful business or even what I was offering to my clients so needless to say the freelance thing didn’t work out that nicely and I ended up working as a waitress, an admin assistant for a financial planner, a yoga instructor and many other jobs to make ends meet as I forged along.
