How This Kombucha Business Made Its Way To The Front Of The Line, And Profits Too

Kombucha is a bubbly fermented tea to which a business empire was built on. Meet Daina Trout, co-founder and CEO of Health-Ade, a kombucha powerhouse.

Health-Ade started from humble beginnings in 2012, starting off with small batches and selling at farmer’s markets, but through the quality of their product, they grew rapidly to the multi-million-dollar business they are today.

Health-Ade retails in 40,000 stores like Whole Foods and Trader Joes. Now a household name, Health-Ade is one of the fastest growing beverage brands in the country and has fans like Chrissy Teigen and Jaden Smith.

The road to success was not easy. Daina, alongside her co-founders Justin and Vanessa, started with no money and were living on $7 a day. They worked 12+ hour days brewing kombucha and taking it to their local farmer’s market. After many hurdles, Health-Ade finally hit its stride and turned into one of the most sought-after kombucha brands on the market.

Today, Health-Ade has a 100,000 sq ft brewery and 150 employees. In May, they launched a brand re-fresh and a powerful new campaign to educate consumers on the power of gut health.

The purpose of the rebrand is to educated consumers on their gut health, which is documented on the rebranded website. Knowing that gut health plays an integral part in our overall health, the benefits of taking care of your gut health include, but are not limited to, elevating your mood and mood regulation, keeps immune system up and running, and helps you absorb nutrients.

Daina’s tips to business management and finding success in business:

1.    Trust your gut (no pun intended!)

When you have a deep belief in what you are doing, no matter how hard things get, keep going. Entrepreneurship is full of challenges, and it will have its harder moments as well as wins, especially in the beginning. Hold onto those promising wins as they are a sign that you are going in the right direction.

2.    Profit will come

It took eight years for Health-Ade to finally break a profit. It was a long road but typical of the beverage industry. Regardless, stay the course and don’t give up. Make sure you have a financial plan with financial projections that guide you along the process and you know when that breakeven point and further profitability will come.

3.    Good money management in business is essential for success

Accounting goes so much further than debits and credits, and it is essential to read your financial reports and understand your business numbers. Even when you have CFOs and accountants in charge of your finances, you still need to be on top of them and understand how your money is managed.

The bottom line is starting a business can be hard work, but the majority of entrepreneurs who have started a business have struggled, had feelings of giving up, but persevered. There is no set schedule to success, and once you succeed you need to maintain that success. There will always be challenges to face, but the key to success is resiliency and perseverance.
