4 Ways to Get Moving When Emotions Have You Stuck

Our emotions are so powerful that they can impact not only how we feel, but how we think and act. Sometimes it can feel like we are consumed by our emotions. We are so deep and overwhelmed by them that it can feel like we’re drowning. Thankfully, there are ways that you can move forward when you feel trapped or consumed by your emotions.

When national news or current events invoke trauma and grief on the nation, when you lose someone close to you or when a local tragedy affects the community… these four tips will be helpful as you move forward. I’m not saying that they’re going to fix everything, because they won’t. But hopefully, they’ll help you to get up each morning, ready to push and face your day with courage, determination, and hope.

Why you’ve got to PUSH

When you feel ‘heavy’ because of what’s going on in your life or from what you see on the news, it can be easy to let yourself think – why does anything I’m doing even matter?

You can’t help but feel helpless. However, you’ve got to PUSH. Push is when you don’t feel like doing something, but you push yourself to do it anyway.

Why?

Because we (the small business owners and goal-setters) are where change starts in our world. We don’t have the luxury of staying in bed all day and doing nothing. Remaining stagnant helps nobody. We’ve got to be the change we want to see in the world. We’ve got to leverage our skills, our drive and our willingness to make a change. We’ve got to PUSH.

So, how can you push? Let’s find out:

1. Power Up

Sometimes powering up means pretending. You’ve got to fake it till you make it. If you don’t want to work or go for a jog or whatever it may be, you’ve got to pretend that you do want to do it.

You need to power up, recharge your mindset and do the things that honestly, you’d rather not do. When you’re stuck in your emotions, it’s because you’re inactive. To motivate yourself, you’ve got to move to action. You’ve got to move through the actions as if you want to. That’s how you power up and keep pushing daily.

2. Upward Focus

When we’re focused on ourselves too much, we keep looking to the past for answers or we dwell on everything that could go wrong, we’re not moving forward. It’s like being stuck in quicksand and the only way to get out of it is to stop looking down and start looking up.

To change your mindset, you need to think positive and look ahead. What are the good things you have in your life? What good things are coming to you if you work for them? You’ve got to stop being ‘stuck’ in your emotions and start having an upward focus. Focus on where you’re heading, not on what’s wrong with where you are.
