May I implore you to start a garden

May I implore you to start a garden
A wee one will do
Step into creating food
Growing food
Please do it.
Reconnect to your personal power by using your hands to touch the soil.
Care for your plants with water and attention
Let the pants communicate with you
Let them heal you
Let them show you how life works
When we reconnect to things as simple (and yet so disconnected for many of us) as growing food
We reclaim
We remember a blueprint that lives inside of us in our DNA
And we remember that we are part of a whole
And we remember that caring for something mirrors how we take care of ourselves.
Whatever you can plant, wherever you can plant it—try it.
See what becomes of you, of it, and of your family.

“I don’t want you just to sit down at the table.
I don’t want you just to eat, and be content.
I want you to walk out into the fields
where the water is shining, and the rice has risen.
I want you to stand there, far from the white tablecloth.
I want you to fill your hands with the mud, like a blessing.”

—Mary Oliver

“The way to maintain one’s connection to the wild is to ask yourself what it is that you want. This is the sorting of the seed from the dirt.”

—Clarissa Pinkola Estes

“The soil is the great connector of lives, the source and destination of all. It is the healer and restorer and resurrector, by which disease passes into health, age into youth, death into life. Without proper care for it we can have no community, because without proper care for it we can have no life.”

—Wendell Berry
