The 5 Freshest Hair Color Trends For Spring 2021

After a year in lock-down, the word of the moment seems to be “re-emergence” as fashion and beauty brands suddenly address how women are re-evaluating their style. Hair care and color routines this past year centered on low maintenance colors for much of 2020. The tables just turned. Now, women are suddenly seeking to have a bit of fun with color, or go with an unexpected take on a classic shade. Think Cyndi Lauper’s famed song lyrics, “Girls, just wanna have fun.”

The list of celebrities from Hilary Duff, Demi Lovato, Kylie Jenner to Dua Lipa and Katy Perry, with bright hair colors, keeps growing. They are not alone with all the experimental and fearless TikTok ‘e-girls’ joining the club. The result is the emergence of a new and burgeoning vibrant online hair subculture.

The statistics are equally fascinating. According to AURA, one of the newest personalized hair care brands on the market that launched late January this year, when their customers ordered personalized hair care products, 87% of customers opted in for pigment with their masque and 82% of their consumers opted for pigment in their conditioner.

The psychology of this up and coming trend is two-fold. Temporary hair color is in demand because the shades can be bold and wearable but also because they can wash out in 10-12 washes. Somehow this has a calming effect on consumers who might want to step out of their comfort zone yet do it without significant long term risk. As a result, 75% of AURA customers in March opted for a fantasy shade as women are looking to have fun with their hair right now (especially as life is getting somewhat back to normal.)

According to AURA specialist Genevieve Barnoski, “The majority of women are opting for fantasy shades with purple and pink hues.” However, the caveat to selecting the perfect shade is also dependent on your base hair color. If you are thinking of taking the plunge, Barnoski, AURA and Leianna Hillo, Lead Colorist at eSalon, share their top 5 Spring hair color trends for 2021.

TREND: Pink Rose/Gold. Best for women with light blonde to dark blonde hair, this trend for spring was designed to turn heads with its rosy hues that are delicately feminine. AURA designed it as a nod to looking at life through rose-colored glasses after the year we’ve all just experienced.

TREND: Bronze Brunette. Ideally suited for medium to dark brunette shades, this mix of AURA copper and gold tones complements each other to create a natural warmth. They are both wonderful on their own, but when combined they enhance each other’s beauty and deliver a undeniable wow factor that is heavily trending right now.

TREND: Amethyst. Designed for light blonde hair, this color is multi-faceted. Just like an amethyst stone, it keeps its softness while also being a little edgy. Because the hue is on the cooler site, AURA recommends it for those women who are looking for “subtle sophistication that’s still bold enough to catch the eye.”

TREND: Tiger Daylily. Attributed to Leianna Hillo, Lead Colorist at eSalon, Tiger Daylily custom hair color is for anyone looking to liven up their hair color or cover up grays. This bold copper color shade pairs best with fair skin and warm to cool undertones.

TREND: Chocolate Lily. According to eSalon’s Hillo, “This versatile color works for all brunettes, any age, and any skin tone. It’s full of light and warmth, sprinkled with natural golden and mahogany tones.”

Finally, if you’re looking for a reason to switch up your look but still a bit skittish, any one of these Spring hair color trends will grow out gracefully.
