What are the Benefits of Mindfulness for Children

Is mindfulness important for you and your child(ren)?

Yes, in my professional opinion, it is!

In this article, you’ll learn what mindfulness is, its benefits, and how to create a mindful routine that will not only help your family but YOU as well, which is paramount as a business owner.

WHAT IS MINDFULNESS

Mindfulness, what is it?

Mindfulness, to me, is about being present, slowing down, and noticing what is happening around you. Tuning into your intuition and your senses to fully experience the moment. You’re at peace – it feels like home.

Being mindful is the opposite of rushing or multitasking. When you’re mindful, you’re taking your time. You’re focusing in a relaxed, easy way.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF MINDFULNESS

There are several benefits of mindfulness for children, but here are my ten favorite ones:

  • Reduces anxiety and stress

  • Improves decision-making skills and cognitive thinking

  • Increases self-esteem and confidence

  • Improves communication and social skills

  • Increases emotional intelligence and self-regulation skills

  • Increases attention span and ability to focus

  • Reduces distractions

  • Improves listening skills

  • Slows down the mind and body and generates more awareness

  • Increases overall happiness

Important Note: Mindfulness can help children (and adults) with ADD, ADHD, Autism or Autism Spectrum Disorder, Sensory Processing Disorders, and other special needs who struggle with their inability to focus, limited attention span, increased distractions, and over-sensory stimulation.

In short, I love mindfulness because it will improve ALL children’s behavior and emotional well-being!

It’s simple enough for children to understand and incorporate into their day; it works and isn’t some “placebo effect,” the results are often immediate and not to mention the long-term benefits for the child with continual use of a mindfulness routine.

In my opinion, it is a game-changer!

Mindfulness has various benefits for children (and adults), and it’s something I recommend to everyone when opportunity knocks. I am often asked how do you create a mindfulness routine with your child(ren)? So let’s discuss that!

HOW TO PRACTICE MINDFULNESS WITH CHILDREN

When it comes to practicing mindfulness with children and creating a routine, it’ll be a bit of trial and error. No two children are the same, and what works for one child may not resonate for another. I encourage you to have fun while you explore what activities bring joy to you, your child(ren), and any other members of the family.

Once you identify 3-5 activities that you can commit to doing as part of a routine, determine when you’ll perform these tasks, for how long, and how often if you’re not doing them daily to start. Create your plan of action, and remember it takes 21 days of consistent activity to form a new habit.
